PEELD / LabPark Guaraqueçaba
PEELD is a research program for the sustainable development of the atlantic rain forest the coastal area in southern Brazil and is located in the Environmental Protection Area (Área de Proteção Ambiental – APA) of Guaraqueçaba, State of Paraná in the South of Brazil.
The area is recognised by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Almost all types of Atlantic Rainforest vegetation are represented within this area: primary and secondary upland forest, coastal forest, mangroves and swamp.
A wide variety of aquatic ecosystems are also present: freshwater, estuary with varying salinity and salt water. In addition, small fishing villages are immediately adjacent to the area.
This land is thus ideal for research on the natural resources of the Guaraqueçaba area, and for developing models of sustainable development on behalf of local communities.
The program aims to inventory and study plants biodiversity in plots of Atlantic coastal forest. The information gathered will then be used to base the development of sustainable projects.
